I hope you had a happy St. Patrick’s Day! March 17th is better known in my home as Happy Jose Montas Day due to it being my father’s birthday.
My father was born in 1949 in the Dominican Republic. He is a man of words, family, and fashion. One of the most significant stories of my childhood came about after we moved to United States. We were an immigrant family who spoke barely any English. There was a kid on my bus who loved to torment, bully, and harass me daily. One day, as we got off the bus, he grabbed my backpack and tossed it in the canal. I came home devasted. When my father arrived home and heard what occurred he marched down to this young boy’s home to discuss the matter with the boy’s father. Although the man was initially not appropriate in the interaction (like father, like son!), my father’s charm, engagement, and WISDOM won the day. He was able to get the man to agree to buy my destroyed items and elicited an apology from the son. When we left, the two fathers shook hands like gentlemen.
Thank you Papi for loving your daughters well and Happy (belated) Birthday!
