Legally Speaking...
First up, the state is taking the gloves off against Big Tech. The Florida Attorney General just launched a major lawsuit against TikTok, threatening billions in penalties for allegedly ignoring state laws meant to protect kids online. On another note, Florida’s property insurance market is finally hitting its strongest financial stride in over a decade, welcoming three brand-new carriers just in time for hurricane season to give you more coverage options. Florida lawmakers are pushing to expand the homestead exemption up to $250,000.
Florida Takes on TikTok:
Florida’s latest crackdown on TikTok is a fierce warning shot to Big Tech. The state claims the video-sharing giant is actively defying laws designed to block children from social media. Interestingly, State Attorney General James Uthmeier noted that Meta is the only major tech company currently complying with the new restrictions. That leaves the rest of Silicon Valley’s heavy hitters exposed to massive legal risk. If Florida gets its way, TikTok could face "billions" of dollars in damages for allegedly deceiving parents about the psychological risks of its platform.
Good News for Florida Homeowners:
Three new property insurers (Builder Reciprocal, Frontline, and Wing Sale) have launched in Florida right before the June 1 start of the 2026 hurricane season. Following state legislative reforms to tackle fraud, a total of 20 new insurers have entered the state since 2023. Experts report the market is in its strongest financial position in over a decade, meaning more choices for consumers and a well-capitalized industry ready to handle potential storm claims.
DeSantis Pushes Major Tax Relief:
Governor Ron DeSantis has called lawmakers back to Tallahassee for a three-day special session starting Monday to vote on a massive homestead property tax exemption. The plan would raise the exemption to at least $250,000, immediately eliminating property taxes for an estimated 60% of Florida homeowners. While Senate leadership is on board, critics warn the plan could severely drain billions from local school districts, public safety, and county healthcare systems. To offset the loss, DeSantis proposes creating a state trust fund to grant money back to local communities for "core services," though a detailed blueprint has not yet been released. If passed by the legislature, the measure will head to voters as a constitutional amendment this November.

The Chef du Jour program at The Haven for Children organizes volunteers to provide dinner 365 days a year for the children who come to live at The Haven. Volunteers deliver meals for approximately 12 children and 3 caregivers, each and every day. Karen and her family graciously volunteer monthly to ensure there is a hot cooked meal for the children and caregivers at The Haven.
